Feel the Brrr - Enjoy Your Workout Outdoors in These Still-Frigid Temps

 

If you're getting a little antsy about starting an exercise program, don't let the cold stop you.

 

Here are some ways to get moving, even in the cold:

 

  • Go for a walk and feel the crispness in the air and the sun on your face.

 

  • Is there snow outside? Put on your winter boots and walk in the snow; pick up the pace to increase the cardio.

 

  • Go sledding enjoy the downhill ride, and the climb to the top of the hill is such great exercise. Walking uphill hits different muscles than walking on flat ground. Don't be surprised if your glutes are a little sore the next day. This is a terrific exercise for both kids and adults.

 

  • Cross-country skiing is one of the best winter exercises. Besides the beautiful scenery, you are using all your muscle groups for a full body workout.

 

  • Remember ice skating as a kid? When is the last time you put on those skates? You may be a little wobbly at first, but after a few rounds, you'll skate like a pro.

 

  • Just being out in the elements can be emotionally invigorating. Enjoy the feeling of your body in motion and be aware of how your muscles are feeling. Concentrate on your breathing, feel your lungs expand and you’re inhaling and exhaling. Be aware of the surface under your feet - how it feels and your body’s reaction to it.

 

A few things to remember to keep yourself safe:

 

  • Cold air is very drying, so make sure you hydrate well before your outside routine. Take small sips of water while exercising and drink plenty afterward.

 

  • Most importantly, dress appropriately for the cold; wearing layers allows you to remove clothing if you become overheated.
